This AI weather app has fake ads and it’s genius-level storytelling

I was listening to the most recent episode of The Talk Show, John Gruber’s podcast, where he interviewed Brian Mueller, the developer behind CARROT Weather. At one point, as they were talking about CARROT’s business model, Mueller explained that the free version of the app has ads, but not like you think. The ads are all fake, and I keep thinking that it’s one of the smartest things I’ve heard in a long time.
After all, CARROT’s schtick is that it’s a weather app with personality. Specifically, it’s an opinionated weather app with an AI robot who happens to have a very snarky personality. If you like that kind of thing, you’ll love CARROT. Even if you don’t care for a weather app that will yell at you or insult your humanity, CARROT is still incredibly good.
