Coverage of AI threatening entry-level jobs has been so extensive that the narrative is starting to feel like common sense. But there’s no economic rule that dictates a new technology will hurt young workers most; often it’s the reverse.
Rather than a generation of careers torpedoed by AI, we may look back in a few years and see today’s tough job market for younger workers as just a blip.
“I don’t think it’s a law of physics” that AI will take entry-level jobs, said LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman on a recent episode of his podcast Possible.
He’s not the only one who is unconvinced. “My view is that it is still too early to tell, with any impact of AI so far likely small in the aggregate,” says Peter McCrory, head of economics at Anthropic.
