REUTERS — In his book Black Sun, Edward Abbey called butterflies “flying flowers”. I think of that line when I see western tiger swallowtails near my home. They bring me joy. But butterfly populations are crashing, signaling ecosystem collapse. According to the United Nations-backed IPBES assessment, many butterflies and more than one million other species face extinction, driven by habitat loss, overexploitation and climate change.
Now, a massive new threat looms, one largely absent from global conversations: artificial intelligence’s failure to consider what happens to nature in a tech-dominated world.
