Millions of people are unknowingly giving away their contacts’ private information through apps, FBI says

OREGON LIVE — “Users should be aware of what user data these apps request access to upon download. When access is permitted by the user, the app can persistently collect data and users’ private information throughout the device, not just within the app or while the app is active,” the FBI warning states.


When apps prompt users to invite friends or contacts, people may unknowingly grant companies access to names, email addresses, user IDs, physical addresses and phone numbers. Some apps’ terms of service allow companies to store user data on servers located in China for “as long as the developers deem necessary,” according to the FBI.
