YouTubers sue Apple for scraping their videos to train AI

PC MAG — Three YouTube channels, h3h3Productions, MrShortGame Golf, and Golfaholics, are suing Apple over claims that the iPhone maker scraped videos without permission to train its AI models.


The class-action lawsuit claims Apple violated the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) when it unlawfully circumvented YouTube’s protections to scrape millions of copyrighted videos for AI training purposes. The claim is based on an academic paper published by Apple researchers that states the company used a dataset called Panda-70M. It contains millions of illegally obtained, high-quality YouTube videos split into 70 million clips.
