AI productivity tools are increasing expectations, not reducing work

INC. I was in a strategy meeting last month when a founder casually mentioned his team’s AI engagement dropped. He said it the way someone might mention missed revenue targets.

I thought tools like “vibe coding” would make work feel lighter. You chat with an AI. It builds the thing. You sip your oat milk latte, and maybe you leave the office before 6 p.m. Except now your CEO is pulling up everyone’s AI usage dashboards and calling people out for not spending enough. Companies are literally tracking “interactions per day” as a productivity metric.

Here’s the pattern no one’s naming: Every time a tool makes something easier, organizations don’t bank the time saved. Instead, they absorb it into higher expectations.
