Why corporate AI mandates don’t work

BLOOMBERG — Earlier this month Amazon’s top engineers gathered at their weekly meeting to address an uncomfortable question: Why did its website keep breaking? One recent meltdown lasted for six hours, during which customers were locked out of checkout. Who knows how many shopping carts were abandoned.


The cause of the outages? Amazon’s own AI, according to the Financial Times, which says the incidents were “tied to the use of AI coding tools.”


Amazon disputes the FT’s account, saying AI was not a major factor. But AI tools have been known to cause mischief elsewhere.
